How it all began…

The story of Forefront Filament doesn’t begin with a 3D printer, but with a shoe sole.

We have worked for many years with plastics raw material producers, converters, manufacturers and brands to help them to understand how to get the best out of what plastic, and in particular, polyolefins, can offer. Global chemical companies have developed technology that can produce polymers of clever mixtures of polypropylene and polyethylene with nearly any characteristic you could want in a product – tough, rigid, transparent, flexible, rubbery, soft touch – for nearly any form of manufacturing.

In one of the initiatives, we worked with a footwear brand to investigate the use of polyolefins in footwear components. One day, whilst working in the lab, someone said – "you know what, with a bit of work, this could make a great flexible filament for 3D printing!" So we thought – why not give it a try?...
